What is an admitted carrier? Non-Admitted carrier?

An admitted carrier is backed by the state and allowed to sell certain types of insurance in said state. They are backed by a fund called a guarantee fund that is in place if the company goes bankrupt to protect its policyholders.

If a carrier is not an admitted carrier, it is not backed by the state and the insurance company does not necessarily have to follow the state rules and regs.

Just because a carrier is not admitted does not make it a less than repubital company. Many carriers have to start somewhere. For a list of admitted and non-admitted carriers, go to Google, and search for a list. I used ”admitted carriers in CA” and an entire list came up from the department of insurance.
